Hello freedom seekers and hello to, hopefully, some Swifties that are tuning into this episode. Today I'm going to change things up from the regular programming and share with you my literal favorite story in the entire world that I get to tell my favorite experience that has ever happened to me, you know, other than maybe my wedding night, of course, and my best, most epic manifestation that has ever come true. Today I'm going to share with you the time that not only did I meet Taylor Swift, but I actually got to party with Taylor Swift and even have the pictures to prove it. So many people are dragging Tay-Tay's name into their headlines, into their content lately, and I guess I'm guilty of it too, but I'm going to share the positive about her. She was exactly how I hoped she would be, in real life, in the wild, not with all the cameras on her. She was everything I wanted her to be, and more so. Today I'm going to tell you about this epic story from one of my favorite nights of my life, when I was in New York City. Now, why do I connect this experience with manifesting?
Speaker 1:Well, as a child, I was often referred to as a witch by my mother, in the very best ways. Back then we didn't really have language around manifesting like we do today, but when I think about it, that's what I was doing. I have so many core memories from my childhood where I had a dream or some idea and something I wanted and seemed impossible or unlikely, and it came true. My mom would always say to me you're a witch, careful what you say. Fun fact I am actually named after a witch. So my mom, carrie, who has also been on the podcast, is from the era of the show Bewitched. You know the show Bewitched, samantha. She has the magical nose that she scrunches in certain ways to make magic happen. Well, I think that was my mom's favorite show growing up. That's at least the story I was told. I was named after her and I remember growing up loving shows like Sabrina, sailor Moon, charmed, if you know. Charmed oh my, my goodness. I would love to connect with you about that, because I don't really talk to any people who were into charm, but I've literally never missed an episode really anything that was featuring a strong female who made her impossible. Her reality was something I was drawn to, and bonus points if she had a cat. And while I still refer to myself as a witch. Now I'm more call it manifesting, and so this is my biggest, most epic manifestation to date.
Speaker 1:Let me take you back in time to that period of Sam, this period before Freedom Lifestyle, before I was married, before I was a woman in her 30s in a small mountain town. This old Sam, she was an entrepreneur. If you remember from an episode I did, maybe like season three, something like that, but it was all about the very first business I ran with my two best friends. If you heard the episode or were part of my life back then, you remember the name Ezzy Lynn. We were a fashion and accessories company and we are part of that industry, and a big part of how we sold our product was to go to music festivals. We were always on the hunt for celebrity endorsements, and celebrities very frequently attended music festivals. We had our eyes set on a dream partnership though Ariana Grande. She has that signature high ponytail, and one of our most popular products was our handmade hair scrunchies. Ari is also known for being an animal lover and our business partnered with the World Wildlife Fund, so every single scrunchie we had was named after an endangered species, and when you purchase that scrunchie, 20% of every sale would go towards adopting that particular animal through the World Wildlife Fund. We knew if Ariana Grande heard about us she would love it, and so me and my co-founders.
Speaker 1:We were often traveling to music festivals. Traveling around the US, we would travel to New York fairly often having meetings with major magazines like Cosmopolitan and 17 Magazine. I still remember fangirling over their on-site closets. That was such a fun time in my life. But there was one particular trip to New York that really stands out. So on this particular visit me and one of my co-founders we were in New York. We were at our Airbnb and I have a very clear memory of us getting ready to go for that night. We were going to go clubbing, we were curling our hair with our wands and I have a very clear memory of us getting ready to go out for that night. We were going to go clubbing, we were curling our hair with our wands and I don't even know why we turned on the TV.
Speaker 1:Thinking about turning on cable television right now seems so strange, but for context, this was about a decade ago, and so we turned on the television. We're getting ready and on TV suddenly we're hearing how it is the 40th anniversary episode for Saturday Night Live tonight and it is going to be recorded live tonight in New York City. And guess what? They're telling us where the recording is. They're like giving us the address at Rockefeller Center, where I guess they record all of the episodes. I've never tried to go watch a taping of SNL. I do love watching SNL and I would have, but I just couldn't believe that they were telling us where it was gonna be. And now they're announcing all of the celebrities that are gonna be in attendance and they're naming everybody. And sure enough they mentioned Taylor Swift. So again, this is about 10 years ago. Taylor Swift has always been huge, but back then that was probably a period where she was still able to go to events like this without completely stealing the show, which is something they criticize her of doing now today. In my mind, she was the only celebrity, though, there that mattered, and when I heard, she was in the same town as me and I knew where she was going to be at a certain time.
Speaker 1:Our plans for the night very quickly changed and we were determined, and so we had no idea what our plan was or what we were going to do. I would say our mission was even just get eyes on Taylor Swift. We just wanted to see her. Just give me a glimpse of this piece of perfection, and let me see her in person At this point. I had been to, I think, a couple Taylor Swift's. I'd been to the Red concert and this was during 1989. So I had seen her in concert twice, but no, hadn't just seen her walking around, and you know, there's in my mind never too many times for you to see Taylor Swift.
Speaker 1:So, luckily, my business partner was very much on board. She was a big Taylor fan, but she also saw the value in potentially connecting with these other celebrities. So we just took an Uber and we literally just put in Rockefeller Center. We're like, I don't even know what this building looks like or what this is, but we're just going to go there and see what happens. And because they were recording live on the television while we were getting ready of these people heading into the venue, the event had already started. So we had clearly missed all of the chaos of the red carpet from what must have happened outside that building maybe an hour prior. But the red carpet was still there. There was still, like you know, some signs that something had happened, but no one was really around. We just basically beeline to this back door where we saw the red carpet had kind of still been there, and when we get there there's limos outside of the building and people who look like the limo drivers hanging outside smoking and just chilling.
Speaker 1:We decide to spark up some conversation with them. You know, very gentle, you know you don't want to come off as like some crazy van that's dangerous or unhinged or is going to cause problems. So we played it cool. Oh, like what's happening over here? What's going on? Smiley, smiley, smiley, nothing to worry about. We are just two innocent young ladies curious what's going on. And so they tell us oh, there's a big event in here, a lot of celebrities. You just missed it.
Speaker 1:And then eventually we spill the beans. We're like, honestly, we know we are actually from Canada, from a small town, and we are very interested in meeting Taylor Swift. We love Taylor Swift. By any chance is she in there? And I think just us being so upfront about that's what we were here to do that something must have been charming about it, these young, innocent women who were from Canada, who are now here thinking that they were just going to get to meet Taylor Swift and not causing any harm, they just decided that they liked us, I guess, and they were going to give us all of the information that they had.
Speaker 1:We hung out with these limo drivers and they were telling us oh yes, like, hang around here, maybe another hour or so and the event's going to end. And if you stay still and you be cool and hang back against the wall, in about an hour or so all of these celebrities are going to be coming through the store and they're going to be getting into their limos. We're like, oh my gosh, okay, thank you so much. Of course we can be cool, absolutely. We're not here to cause any trouble, so we're just hanging out with them. You know, smoking some cigars, doing what you do in New York City in your 20s with your BFF, trying to meet a celebrity. And, sure enough, the event ends and the celebrities start coming out.
Speaker 1:I would say the biggest celebrity I remember seeing was Leonardo DiCaprio. He walked by, he was with his mom, very sweet, but honestly I didn't care, like. I was so laser focused on like, is Taylor next, is Taylor next, is Taylor next? And because we were doing exactly what the limo driver said, we were just kind of like hanging back beside this wall. No one had an issue with it. But when I describe how close we were, like just imagine a building and then imagine there's an entrance to the building and imagine there's basically two brick walls at the end of the entrance, next to the doors, we were just literally back up against the doors, like the wall beside the doors, and people the celebrities were just coming out through there with their bodyguards, with everything, and we were just being chill. We were just acting like it's no big deal. Now that I think about it, I really can't believe that no security had an issue with us standing there. But again, we played it cool.
Speaker 1:We'd been there for a while. We had been with these limo drivers. It kind of seemed at this point like we were meant to be there. We had probably been there for like 90 minutes at this point, hanging out with these limo drivers, learning about their lives, learning about what they do, learning a little bit about celebrity culture here and there, and they were learning a lot about our obsessive fandom and about our business and we are really here for a purpose. We would love to meet her and potentially get an endorsement for this great business idea that we have. It's a real business actually, not just an idea.
Speaker 1:Okay, so now it's like 30 minutes probably of celebrities exiting the building and getting into their limos and no tailor. And then the line gets quieter and quieter. We see big names like Kristen Wiig. I remember from SNL, jimmy Fallon so many A-listers were leaving the event and getting into these limos and I guess there was an after party and and no Taylor, no Taylor, no Taylor. So finally, during this time, the limo drivers are coming and going.
Speaker 1:So I don't really understand how it works. They must have just had some kind of service where they were hired to just drive back and forth between the Rockefeller Center and Plaza Hotel. Rockefeller Center was where the actual event and the recording was happening and the Plaza Hotel was the after party, a couple of minutes away, and these drivers were just coming back and forth. They'd pick up a group of celebrities, drop them off, come back, and so this whole time we're still here, they see us again, we're still here, they're like no Taylor, we're like no Taylor. And then people just eventually stopped coming out the doors.
Speaker 1:So I say what's going on? Where's Taylor? To the limo driver and just ask you know, still being polite, but also, come on, you told me Taylor would come here. Where's Taylor? And she's like I'm going to go find out what's going on for you. All right, interruption. Bagheera has just joined me on the couch and so if you hear a purring in the background, that's what's happening. I got to keep moving because I'm recording this and then literally getting on a plane to Athens in 12 hours and I'm so excited I'm in the middle of this story, so I'm just going to continue. Where was I? I'm not getting frustrated, but I'm worried that it's no longer going to happen. And so I say to the limo drivers hey, what's going on? No one else seems to be coming out of the building. Hello, you told me I was going to get to meet Taylor.
Speaker 1:So he goes and starts talking to some of the bodyguards or some security that's part of Rockefeller Center, some type of event management of some kind Talking to them, talking to them, talking to them. And he comes back and he's like so there was a second door, there was another door that celebrities were leaving from, and I guess she left from that door and we were like oh OK, well, pretty cool. Well, pretty cool. Leonardo DiCaprio, kristen Wiig, jimmy Fallon a number of other celebrities have been in our presence tonight and what a cool experience. At this point, we think this is the best it's going to get. So we're like we're going to go home and one of the limo drivers who's been hanging out with us the whole night and he's like well, do you want to ride? I'm kind of done now, so happy to drop you ladies off wherever you want to go. Like okay, that's actually pretty nice.
Speaker 1:So we hop in the back of his limo and as we're driving, I guess we're just thanking him more, being polite, telling him how, what an exciting night. You know, didn't picture this is what we were going to be doing. Thought we were going to go clubbing. Where do you think we should go now? But so sad we didn't meet Taylor Swift. So he's like okay, let's just swing by the after party. Okay, let's just see, maybe there's something happening going on there. I'm going to drive by the Plaza Hotel.
Speaker 1:So he drives by the Plaza Hotel and there's not really much happening outside anymore. All the celebrities have gone inside, but there's a lot of paparazzi outside and a lot of people who have now gathered around who know what's happening. So it's pretty chaotic. But he has this sign on his limo that basically has shown that he is verified driver and that he is allowed to come in and out all night and has been dropping celebrities off all night. So he's circling the building now and I can tell he's getting an idea. I'm like, ok, a man with an idea. What are we going? What are we thinking? I wish I remembered his name right now. I wish this episode made it to him, because this was literally the most iconic thing that's ever happened to me.
Speaker 1:So he's driving around the building the Plaza Hotel and he's thinking. He's thinking it's like okay, I'll tell you what. I am going to just pull up out front of the event, I'm going to get out of the limo and I'm going to open your door and here's what you're going to do. You are going to beeline and you're going to walk with confidence right into that building and maybe they're going to think you're a celebrity and they're just going to let you in. You know, young girls looking good think we're going clubbing. So you know we're in some fitted outfits let's say More on that in a second but we're like okay, are you sure he's like confidence. Nobody wants to offend a celebrity by not knowing who they are. That's a big part of the culture around here. Like, okay, let's see if this works. So sure enough, he pulls up out front in the event. We see the paparazzi, we see all of this crowd. We see the clear wasn't a red carpet, but a clear carpet leading up to the event Big bodyguards outside. He comes, he opens her door.
Speaker 1:I literally just go into fight or flight mode. I walk out of that limo with my heels on and I just walk straight towards the building and the bodyguards open the door. They literally opened the door for us and so now we can't celebrate. All our eyes are on us. But you know, we kind of just look at each other with like, oh my god, be cool, be cool. If there was ever a moment to be cool, it's literally right now. So now we're in the building. I've never been into the Plaza Hotel. I do not know the layout of this building, I don't know what is what or where I'm going or what to look for, but I have to seem pretty confident now.
Speaker 1:So as we're walking in I kid you not 50 Cent is coming out and we're like hey, what are you doing? Why are you leaving? He chit chats with us. He's like, yeah, sorry, ladies, got to get up early tomorrow, have some things. And I'm like, oh no, don't leave, come on, hang out with us Again. We just keep thinking this is the new peak, this is the new best it's going to get.
Speaker 1:Now we're talking to 50 Cent this is now our first conversation with a celebrity and so we're chit chatting with him. He's joking around, flirting a little. It's like no, ladies, sorry, I got to go and kisses us on the cheek. We're like, oh, my God, okay Now. Maybe you're rolling your eyes Like, why do we treat celebrities as gods? But for me, I've always been very interested in celebrity culture. I've always been interested in tabloids. I grew up reading Perez Hilton and I think it's super interesting the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and I don't deny that. I think it'd be pretty cool to be famous like that and what that's like. And so talking to celebrities, getting kissed on the cheek by a celebrity, was pretty exciting for me at about 24 years old, which was how old I was at the time.
Speaker 1:Okay, so what happens next? So then we keep walking and we're just trying to like follow the music. Right, we can tell there's a party in this hotel or building somehow, but we don't really know what it is or where it is. So we find this area where there's clearly a party and not to be too rude. But it was like C-list celebrities, I think his name's David Spade yeah, he was there, you know, not really A-lister for my generation, not who I'm there to meet, but he's in this area with some other celebrities. We're kind of hanging out there for a second and I'm like no, this isn't it, like this is not the party. Where are all of these big celebrities that are here? And all of a sudden I see a sign and it says Grand Ballroom. And I was like Grand Ballroom, what is that? If you've been to the Plaza Hotel, maybe you know what I'm talking about, but for me I'd never been in the building before, so I have my another core, distinct memory.
Speaker 1:We walk into the Grand Ballroom. As I open the door, it is a gigantic ballroom and every single person in there is dressed in not just classy wedding wear, I'm talking black tie gowns and me and my girlfriend are dressed to go clubbing. So, thankfully, to go with my you know skinny jeans that were luckily dark gray and a you know cleavage popping out type tank top. I had this gold scarf, this thick gold scarf that I brought as, I guess, a jacket. I don't know what I was doing, so I wrap it around me as a shawl to add some you know, royal look to me At least, it was very gold and shiny, but that's what I have on. And then my girlfriend just doesn't take off her jacket. Okay, she is in a tight black peacoat jacket and she is just keeping that on. She keeps it nice and tight, she keeps it fitted. We need to be cool, we need to fit in right now.
Speaker 1:Because as I open this door, not only do I see the biggest celebrities that I've ever imagined or dreamed of my entire life on stage it's Paul McCartney and Jimmy Fallon, and Jimmy's yelling hey, taylor, come up stage, will you play something for us? And as I'm walking into the building, taylor Swift is walking up on the stage with Jimmy Fallon and Paul McCartney and I kind of black out, I just literally beeline for the stage, I ditch my friend, we didn't even communicate. I just go into the middle of the dance floor and I'm, like you know, two rows back. Let's say it's standing room, it's just a casual party. And Taylor goes up and she puts on a guitar and they play all of them, the three of them. They play Shake it Off, some 1989 classics, then they end up playing some Beatles music and they do like four or five songs, and this whole time I am just completely mesmerized.
Speaker 1:I finally go on my phone to be like, hey, I should really look out for my girlfriend that I'm here with and she says, oh, my fucking God, I just met Ariana Grande. I was like what the fuck? She's like what the fuck? I gave her one of our scrunchies. I couldn't even believe this. She was like come here, I'm like I'm not moving anywhere. I am about to meet Taylor Swift, like I'm staying here, you do you? She's like Kate, I'm hanging out near the like cheese food area. She was hanging out near the food playing it cool, just had had her Ariana Grande moment. Like dying to hear. But I'm also getting a private Taylor Swift concert pretty much. And so this whole time, because I was just so focused on Taylor Swift, I was really not aware of my surroundings.
Speaker 1:Now, emma Stone is one of Taylor Swift's good friends, right? You know this if you are interested in Taylor Swift or Emma Stone. But you know she's in the squad, emma. Taylor Swift is quite tall, emma Stone is quite small. This entire time I had been dancing beside Emma Stone, who was barefoot, because she's Emma Stone and she's that cool. She's barefoot on the dance floor and she has her high heels in her armpit and she's dancing to Taylor and I don't notice her. But Taylor goes off stage and now Taylor is walking to go see her friend Emma, and I am standing behind Emma. So Taylor is literally just walking up towards me. Like, imagine I'm in a dance floor. She comes off the stage and just starts walking towards me as Miley Cyrus now goes on stage and starts performing some music too. Like, how is this my real life? So now Taylor Swift and Emma are dancing beside me and I am now dancing, trying to be cool, dancing beside me and I am now dancing, trying to be cool.
Speaker 1:At this point, my friend Sonia comes and nobody has their phones out. Okay, we actually see. We're probably now like maybe a half an hour. We're in this experience where Miley's performing, jimmy's still on stage, paul McCartney's there, people are coming and people are going. They're just riffing. Anyone's going on stage and just making music.
Speaker 1:It's a party. There's celebrities everywhere and two different times while we're dancing basically beside Taylor and Emma, without talking to them, we see people try to come up to Taylor and I don't know what happens. It was men, something interaction happened, but all of a sudden a man comes, which I'm assuming is Taylor's bodyguard, and that person is no longer at the party. So I'm like, okay, well, I definitely can't get kicked out. I don't want to talk to her and get in trouble and I also don't want to annoy her. Like she's probably trying to have a fun night. She's with her people.
Speaker 1:You know, I'm just a peasant, I'm just an average person trying to fit in and be at this party with my scarf draped around me so that no one can tell I'm in a tank top during a black tie party and I'm not meant to be here. I'm not invited. So I got to play it, cool. But I'm like I have to get a photo. I have to say, hi, I have to do something, okay. And so I'm like to my friend. I'm like I'm gonna ask her a photo and my friend's like don't, don't ask her for a photo. I'm like I'm going to ask her a photo. My friend's like don't do it, don't do it, you're going to get us in trouble. I'm like I'm going to do it, so I just wait for my moment. I'm kind of dancing and I was like do you think we could have a picture? And she was like sure, let's take a couple. And then I grabbed out my phone and it happened so quick and I just grabbed two selfies and then that was it. I had the picture and we just kept dancing there and that was it.
Speaker 1:In my mind there's like a million things. I wanted to tell her how fabulous she is, how much she's changed my life, how red should really be a 10 minute song, which of course now we all know that it is. And then I'm going to this concert of hers coming up and oh, by the way, I left you this gift. Like I have a million things that I'm going to say to her and I want to say to her, but I just knew I had to keep it cool. So I chill, I dance, I hang out with them and eventually they, they leave and we spend the rest of the night partying with these A-list celebrities. I'm not kidding when I say everyone that I think is super cool is there? Justin Timberlake, beyonce, jay-z, I've already mentioned Ariana Grande, miley Cyrus, paul McCartney Literally the list goes on.
Speaker 1:Everybody who was super relevant about 10 years ago was in town for this party. I now know there's like this iconic photo of Donald Trump was there in the audience. I don't remember seeing him. I do remember seeing some super drunk and super sloppy celebrities, which was interesting to kind of get a fly on the wall perspective of that. But again, I just tried to like play it cool. If people would talk to me, I would talk to them.
Speaker 1:The bar was flowing, the food was around and, yeah, me and my girlfriend just had the best night, literally of our entire lives, just creeping on celebrities and trying to fit in and the whole time just knowing that in my pocket I got a photo to prove it and she was the sweetest, nicest person, which is exactly how I wanted her to be. To prove it, and she was the sweetest, nicest person, which is exactly how I wanted her to be. It would have sucked if she would have said, nah, sorry, not tonight, I'm just out with my friends, but she didn't. You know, she took that two extra seconds. She saw the look of a fan who just loved her, who was just going to be nice, and this would have meant the world to me and it did. And I think that that says a lot, not only about the type of character she is, but maybe the type of businesswoman she is.
Speaker 1:I have literally streamed every single song she has ever played and put out onto Spotify Music. Last year I was, I think, in the 2% of her fans. All time I have tried to get to every single one of her concerts. It's pretty much impossible to go to the Heiress tour, so hit me up if you have any hookups. I doubt anyone who has a hookup would share it with me, but hey, manifesting Witch vibes, I'm really dying to go. I want to go to the December show in Vancouver, her first time here. I live in Squamish now how perfect would that be. But alas, no tickets to that.
Speaker 1:But even from that moment, like I really think that things could have gone two different directions. She could have just been rude to me and then it would have broke my heart and I kind of would have just snubbed her for the rest of her career. But it totally didn't go that way and I'm just so happy. What else is important from that night? I guess back to the Ariana Grande story, so maybe we can close the loop there.
Speaker 1:So when me and my friend separate, she tells me that basically what happened to her is when she went and was hanging out by the food trying to be cool because her best friend just ditched her. Immediately she said Ariana Grande was there and at the food area too, and Sonia just said hey, I Sonia just went up to her Like said hey I Sonia just went up to her, like I'm pretty sure she just went up to her and was just like hello, you're amazing, you have the best hair. And I think Ariana Grande like complimented her and told her like how beautiful she was or something. She is my old co-founder, she's beautiful woman, so a well-deserved compliment. Ariana Grande like compliments her and then Sonia says I think Sonia just pitches her on the spot and tells her about the scrunchie business and the scrunchie company. And she said that within like a minute after the interaction, I guess Ariana Grande's person or people came up to Sonia and was like do you have a card? And so then not only did she have one of our scrunchies, she also had our business card for Ezzy Lynn with our contact information on it. Sadly, nothing came from it that we know of. We don't know if she ever visited the website or whatever happened to that, but that is as close as we got to getting a celebrity endorsement from her Kind of random.
Speaker 1:She was dating Big Sean at the time and like this just gives you an idea of just like the lengths we would go through to try to meet celebrities. Big Sean came and was doing his performance in London, ontario, which is where I was living at the time with my co-founders, and we knew they were dating and this is like really remember the song I don't give a fuck about you, you stupid ass, I don't give you know, okay. Well, basically I paid to go to that concert and listen to that trash and listen to that like explicit content over and over again, because we were like, well, now Ariana Grande has our scrunchie and maybe if we talk to big sean we can remind him about us and who we are. So we had this whole ploy and hung around after the concert, during the entire concert, we're like trying to figure out who his people were. Making some contacts figured out like who, like some kind of manager or somebody, was telling him we just want to meet him, we just want to meet him. And then they're like okay, well, after the show, hang back, he'll do a few photos with some people. If you hang around this area, we'll make sure you get one.
Speaker 1:So now we spend the entire night at this explicit big sean concert and then, sure enough, when it ends, they pull us aside and there's a small queue of people who now get to go meet big sean and take a photo with him. And it was so funny. We get up to him and we're just like okay, so we just met Ariana Grande a couple of weeks ago and we're hoping you could give her this Like we love her so much, we just have this like package ready to give to him. And he just looked at us and he was like so do you want a photo with me? Though? And we're like uh, yeah, sure, sure, okay, yeah, sure. So we like take a photo with big shot. I'm like but can you give this to ari? So funny.
Speaker 1:Again, nothing came for it, but you got to take your shot in life, right, if there's big things that you want to happen, things that that would just delight you and make you so happy or could potentially change your life forever. You got to go for them. You got to be confident and put yourself in these situations where magic can happen. And then you know, you know, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But even though there's been a few things that I wanted to make happen and manifest into my reality and they didn't come true, it wasn't like I questioned my witch vibes, it wasn't like I questioned my ability to now manifest. It's just realizing that. Okay, that wasn't meant for me right now, but something's coming. If not this, something better. Okay, friends, I love you so much.
